Letter #313

Content Warnings: anxiety, emotional abuse, abandonment, depression, parental trauma

Dear Shugarrr,

Yolanda is in a state of grief.

She simply does not know how to feel.

Not for herself, but for my siblings who lost their father, or is it just a man they know in the

abstract?

To be honest, Yolanda and her siblings do not know their father. He left when her siblings

were just 18 months and now they’re 13 years old.

Yolanda only remembers his face in the peripheral; his memory is like one blurry photo. She

can hardly make out his features in her mind, just his voice she hears through her mother’s

speaker on the phone.

And now he is dead, has the hope of reconciliation  fizzled out? How do you mourn what you

never had? How do you miss what you never knew?

Yet the whole family is in grief, for hopes that have perished and drama that never came

through.

Yours truly

D

Dear Shugarrr,

I woke up today doubting myself, my being, and my will to be.

I have been thirsty for an opportunity, salivating for a chance, but I see the possibility

reducing by the day.

What’s it like to crave something so much, need something so bad, and yet it doesn’t come.

To me, it’s like the feeling at the back of the throat where no tongue can reach.

It’s like an itch from the inside where no one can go.

Yours truly,

D.
