Letter #178

Content warnings: Anxiety, phobia, PTSD

I have a really cool job this summer. It isn’t exactly what I want to be doing, but it lines up with my major really well, is competitive, and is a really big honor to have this position. I have to drive into a big city where I am uncomfortable (and highly stressed). The other day, I forced myself to be sick so that I had an excuse not to drive.

A year and a half ago, I was in a little car accident, and ever since then, I have absolutely HATED driving. I had hoped that signing up for this job would force me out of my fear of highways. Alas, my plans were no match for my anxiety. I made the drive a few times and it’s been fine, I’m just a little scared still. I try to do deep breathing and remind myself that not only will everything be fine, but I have done this before and have been okay. Another thing that helps is listening to music I know all the words to, so it’s almost like I can put my brain on autopilot.
